Here is a recent example composed for a friend who had just received some bad news from his doctor:

I thought I’d pen a word or two on hearing your sad news,
Regarding recent test results one would not want to choose.
Sometimes it seems the darkest cloud has shed its ice cold rain,
And a word or two from caring friends may help to ease the pain.
Though drugs combined with surgery may cure or give relief,
Time is the greatest healer plus a real and sure belief,
To live today and every day determined as before,
To find a way to smile a while and then to smile some more.
Nature can be cruel and kind and not in equal measure,
But everyone has memories to keep and closely treasure.
So hang on to that bag of clubs and think about that swing,
Hit the ball long straight and true and hear that sweet spot sing!
